“Norovirus Cases Surge 47% in UK: Experts Urge Proper Hygiene”

Health officials have raised concerns about a significant increase in severe cases of a highly contagious virus. The UK Health Security Agency reported a 47% surge in norovirus infections in the first two weeks of 2026, compared to the previous monitoring period.

To combat the spread of the virus, authorities have issued crucial guidelines on proper hygiene practices. Norovirus outbreaks are particularly affecting individuals aged 65 and above, with a rise in incidents in healthcare facilities.

Experts emphasized the importance of preventive measures such as frequent handwashing to combat viruses like norovirus. Alcohol-based sanitizers are not effective against norovirus, so using soap and warm water for hand cleansing and bleach-containing products for surface disinfection is recommended.

Amy Douglas, Lead Epidemiologist at UKHSA, advised the public to take simple steps to reduce norovirus transmission, including proper hand hygiene and surface cleaning. Individuals experiencing symptoms should refrain from returning to work, school, or preparing food for others until 48 hours after symptoms have ceased.

Norovirus symptoms typically manifest suddenly, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, high temperature, and body aches. It is advised to stay away from public places until symptom-free for two days.

While flu, COVID-19, and RSV levels are decreasing, the public is urged to continue preventive measures to sustain this trend. Proper ventilation in indoor spaces can help prevent respiratory infections like flu, and symptomatic individuals should stay home.

Eligible individuals are encouraged to get the free flu jab offered by the NHS to protect against severe illness. Vaccination remains crucial in reducing the spread of respiratory viruses and ensuring protection throughout the flu season.

Dr. Alex Allen, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, highlighted the importance of vaccination and preventive measures to maintain the declining trend in respiratory infections. Vaccine appointments are available for those at higher risk to ensure ongoing protection.
