“Jesy Nelson’s Twins Diagnosed with SMA, Lack Newborn Screening”

Jesy Nelson’s partner has praised their twin daughters as “two brave fighters” in their struggle against a degenerative muscle condition. Musician Zion Foster criticized the absence of testing for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in newborns, calling it “unjustifiable.” Jesy, a former member of the group Little Mix, recently disclosed that their twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster, have SMA and will likely face mobility challenges due to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

The Mirror is advocating for SMA inclusion in the NHS newborn screening program to ensure prompt intervention for babies with the disease to prevent muscle function loss caused by neuronal death. Zion, in a heartfelt poem shared on social media, expressed the resilience and spirit of their daughters, emphasizing the importance of accepting and loving them unconditionally.

While curative treatments for SMA are available through the NHS, they can only halt neuronal degeneration and are ineffective in reversing existing disabilities. Despite the proven benefits of early SMA screening, the UK government has not committed to implementing a nationwide newborn test, opting for a pilot program instead, delaying potential rollout until at least 2031. In contrast, Scotland is moving forward with SMA testing for all newborns starting this spring.

Jesy gained fame after winning The X Factor in 2011 as part of Little Mix before pursuing a solo career in 2020. She has since released two solo tracks, including collaborations with Nicki Minaj.
