Dr. Kasim Ahmed has discussed a health issue likened to “sunburn in your stomach” and provided insights on managing it. The NHS doctor and former participant on “The Traitors” shared his perspectives on BBC Morning Live recently.
Describing gastritis as stomach inflammation, Dr. Ahmed differentiated it from gastroenteritis commonly associated with stomach bugs causing diarrhea and vomiting. He likened gastritis to chronic stomach inflammation, comparing it to sunburn but inside the stomach.
Dr. Ahmed highlighted that persistent symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, excessive burping, and flatulence should prompt a visit to the GP. He emphasized that certain foods, such as spicy dishes, fizzy drinks, high-fat fried foods, acidic juices, and alcohol, could exacerbate the condition.
He also mentioned the concern of a bacterial infection called Helicobacter pylori, which can lead to severe gastritis when the stomach lining breaks down. Treatment for bacterial gastritis may involve antibiotics or other medications, along with dietary adjustments like consuming bananas, yogurt, oats, and high-fiber snacks.
Individual responses to treatment may vary, and the NHS recommends specific actions if gastritis persists or worsens, potentially leading to a stomach ulcer. Referral to a gastroenterologist for further investigation, including a gastroscopy, may be necessary in severe cases.
