“Ryanair Adds 20 New Routes to Trendy Tirana, Albania”

Budget carrier Ryanair has introduced several new flight routes to a city that is gaining popularity among British travelers, partly due to its nearby beaches often likened to those in the Maldives.

Ryanair is set to launch 20 additional routes to Tirana, increasing its total routes to the city to 43. Starting in spring, passengers can fly to this Albanian destination from Liverpool, Birmingham, and Dublin, with flight durations just over three hours. These new routes complement Ryanair’s existing UK services from London-Stansted, Manchester, and seasonal flights from Edinburgh.

Seats can now be booked from Liverpool and Dublin for departures beginning March 30, and from Birmingham starting March 29. Fares are available for as low as £23 one-way in May, with temperatures reaching 26°C, making it an appealing choice for budget-conscious sun-seekers in the spring.

For travelers seeking a beach getaway, Tirana offers various options upon arrival. Ksamil, located in the southern part of the country, is a popular beach destination accessible by a direct bus from the airport in under four hours. Ksamil boasts white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and small islands that can be explored by boat, drawing comparisons to the Maldives.

To experience a Maldives-like atmosphere, visitors can book a day at Pema E Thatë, a private beach club offering cabanas for rent. Some cabanas have overwater nets where guests can relax and enjoy the ocean views while sipping a beer priced around 250 Lek (approximately £2.25).

Durrës, situated approximately 30 minutes from Tirana, is a coastal city with a long stretch of sandy beaches. Durrës Beach features a palm-lined promenade and clear blue waters, all within minutes of the historic city center.

Near the port is Plazhi i Currilave, a smaller beach where visitors can rent loungers and umbrellas to enjoy the vibrant beachfront atmosphere. Durrës is known for its Roman amphitheater, with some parts of the 2nd-century structure still intact, including stone steps. The Venetian Tower of Durrës, a medieval fortification, offers panoramic coastal views from its ancient guard towers.

A visit to the Muzeu Arkeologjik, a local archaeological museum showcasing artifacts dating back thousands of years found beneath the city streets, is also recommended.

Tirana itself is a captivating city break destination, blending Ottoman and Soviet architectural styles in a vibrant urban setting. Skanderbeg Square serves as a central hub for exploring the city, featuring landmarks like the Et’hem Bey Mosque, the Soviet-style Opera House, and the National History Museum adorned with a mural depicting Albania’s struggle for independence.

Travelers can explore Bunk’Art 2, a museum housed within a Communist-era nuclear bunker, offering insights into Albania’s history during its years as a secretive Communist state. A trip to Tirana Castle, transformed into a unique attraction with food stalls and craft shops, is also a popular recommendation for visitors looking to sample Albanian cuisine and purchase souvenirs.
