NATO Troops Deployed to Greenland Amid Trump’s Invasion Threat

European politicians have issued a stern warning to the US President as NATO troops land in Greenland amidst concerns that President Donald Trump might order an invasion of the island. Trump has escalated his rhetoric about acquiring Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, stating his desire to “own” the territory. A French military unit has arrived in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, alongside soldiers from the UK, Germany, Sweden, and Norway, demonstrating a show of force to reinforce NATO’s presence.

French diplomat Olivier Poivre d’Arvor conveyed a clear message to the US President upon the troops’ arrival, emphasizing the significance of NATO’s presence in the region. This development follows a high-level meeting in Washington between Danish ministers and US officials, where discussions ended without a resolution, with Denmark’s foreign minister highlighting Trump’s persistent ambition to “conquer” Greenland.

Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, described the meeting as ending in a “fundamental disagreement,” underscoring the conflicting views on Greenland’s future. Despite the discord, both nations have committed to ongoing dialogue. The joint military exercises, known as Operation Arctic Endurance, involving the NATO soldiers on the island, aim to bolster security measures in the region.

Officials in Denmark have expressed intentions to enhance NATO’s presence in the Arctic to safeguard European and transatlantic security interests. The UK confirmed the dispatch of a military officer to join reconnaissance efforts for the planned Arctic Endurance exercise, emphasizing the collaborative approach to reinforce security in the High North.

Germany has also announced the deployment of a small troop contingent to Nuuk, while the duration of the French military presence remains uncertain. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has cautioned that any US attempt to acquire Greenland could jeopardize NATO’s cohesion and the military alliance’s stability.

President Trump’s rationale for acquiring Greenland, purportedly to thwart potential Chinese and Russian influence, has sparked concerns. He underscored the importance of ownership to defend territories, hinting at employing various means to safeguard US interests in Greenland.
