“Flight Attendants’ Critical Role in Ensuring Safety During Takeoff and Landing”

During the moments before takeoff and after landing, most airline passengers are preoccupied with their smartphones or simply waiting for the flight to progress. However, for cabin crew members, these times are critical and require their full attention to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

Flight attendants meticulously check the cabin during these phases to ensure everything is secured, and passengers are following safety instructions by staying seated with seatbelts fastened and tray tables stowed. Experts emphasize the importance of heightened vigilance during takeoff and landing, as the majority of incidents occur during these periods.

In an interview with Travel + Leisure, Katherine Drossos, an experienced flight attendant and in-flight supervisor, highlighted the significance of these moments. She explained that cabin crew members focus on securing the cabin and preparing passengers for safety during takeoff and landing, allowing them to prioritize safety measures when it matters the most.

Part of this preparation includes the safety briefing that covers seatbelt use, oxygen masks, and life jackets. Once the demonstration is complete, passengers may notice cabin crew members seated in a specific posture with their hands positioned for immediate action in case of an emergency.

Although passengers may perceive this stance as casual, Drossos clarifies that it is a deliberate brace-ready position designed to ensure stability and readiness for any safety procedures that may be necessary. This posture is part of a broader strategy aimed at maintaining alertness and preparedness during critical flight phases.

Beyond physical positioning, cabin crew members engage in a mental rehearsal of emergency protocols while seated. This mental review helps them stay fully prepared to respond promptly to any unexpected situations that may arise during the flight.

The importance of this technique gained attention after a flight attendant’s viral TikTok video demonstrated the routine. This “bracing position” involves sitting upright with specific hand placements to minimize potential injuries in the event of an impact.

While passengers are not required to adopt the same brace position, aviation professionals recommend attentiveness during safety briefings and adherence to safety guidelines during takeoff and landing. The focused demeanor of flight attendants reflects their extensive training and constant vigilance, contributing to the overall safety of everyone on board.
