In the last half-year, Zoe Ball and Jo Whiley have explored their admiration for various celebrities through their podcast, enhancing their reputation as BBC Radio hosts. Jo had a memorable experience meeting renowned TV gardening expert Monty Don at his well-known Longmeadow garden, located in Ivington near Leominster, Herefordshire.
The expansive Longmeadow garden, showcased on Gardeners’ World, comprises four distinct areas – The Cottage Garden, The Jewel Garden, The Paradise Garden, and The Vegetable Garden – each possessing remarkable individuality and charm.
Despite its grandeur on television, Jo discovered that Longmeadow appears more modest in person. She shared her firsthand experience of touring Monty’s garden on her Dig It podcast, describing it as beautiful, rugged, and smaller than expected.
Monty Don elaborated on the evolution of Longmeadow’s Cottage Garden, once a kitchen garden that transitioned into a traditional floral space. The garden now boasts a variety of shrub roses in summer and structured features like box hedging and Irish Yews in winter.
Zoe was intrigued by Jo’s visit to Monty’s Jewel Garden, which Monty describes as the central focus of the entire garden, characterized by plants with jewel-like qualities. The Paradise Garden showcases Monty’s sophisticated design approach with symmetrical beds and distinctive plant selections.
The Vegetable Garden at Longmeadow serves a practical purpose, providing fresh produce for Monty’s kitchen and offering a delightful experience of selecting ingredients for a meal. Monty emphasizes the joy of harvesting and cooking from the garden.
Don’t miss the return of Gardeners’ World tonight at 8pm on BBC Two.
