Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has been recognized as the most budget-friendly European city to experience the holiday season. According to Skyscanner, a trip to Vilnius in December can cost as little as £35. Known for its stunning Christmas tree, Vilnius has been awarded the title of the European Christmas Capital for 2025 by the Christmas Cities Network, having previously won accolades for having the most beautiful tree in Europe in 2019 and 2020.
The festive season in Vilnius commences on November 29 with the lighting of the grand Christmas tree in Cathedral Square. This iconic tree, a highlight of the city’s winter celebrations, will remain on display until January 6, 2026, allowing both tourists and locals ample time to revel in the holiday spirit. Visitors can explore the enchanting Christmas Market, skate on the Vilnius ice rink in the heart of the Old Town, and enjoy a festive ride on the Christmas train through the city’s festively decorated streets.
Vilnius has been crowned the top destination for affordable festive getaways in Europe, outshining 14 other cities in the annual Post Office Christmas Markets Barometer. The cost of a two-night weekend escape in Vilnius, totaling £509, covers return flights, accommodation in three or four-star hotels, airport transfers, evening meals with wine, coffee, festive drinks, and Christmas Market treats. Despite fluctuations in currency values, Vilnius has managed to maintain its low costs, with prices dropping by 0.4% compared to the previous year.
Compared to the second-ranked city, Riga, Vilnius offers an 8% cost advantage, even though expenses for meals, drinks, and transfers are cheaper in Riga. The research also indicates that while costs have decreased in half of the cities surveyed, Vilnius continues to stand out as an economical choice for holiday travel. Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, emphasized the importance of considering currency fluctuations when planning travel, as savings can vary significantly depending on the destination.
Travel enthusiasts have praised Vilnius for its magical Christmas atmosphere, with one Instagram user describing the city as “pure magic without the crazy crowds” during the festive period.
