“Disability Advocate Criticizes Cat Deeley’s Comments on Jesy Nelson’s Twins”

Disability rights advocate Sophie Morgan has raised concerns about Cat Deeley’s choice of wording while discussing Jesy Nelson’s twins. The former Little Mix member recently disclosed that her twin daughters have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1.

In a recent episode of This Morning, Cat mentioned that “disabled children can lead normal lives” if newborn screening for SMA was implemented, a measure Jesy is advocating for. In response, Sophie, who faced paralysis after a car accident, shared a post from disabled Guardian writer Frances Ryan, emphasizing that saying the kids “could have lived normal lives” is not appropriate.

The post highlighted that disabled children can pursue careers and relationships but often encounter obstacles, including physical challenges and societal barriers. It stressed the importance of having disabled individuals in media discussions to provide nuanced perspectives based on lived experiences.

Jesy appeared on This Morning to discuss her daughters’ diagnosis, emphasizing the need for SMA testing at birth, a practice in over 40 countries but not standard in the UK. Cat mentioned the availability of the test in multiple countries, including the United States since 2023, and acknowledged the minimal cost of 36p for the test, deeming it essential for early intervention.

Jesy’s advocacy for SMA testing resonated with parents of affected children, with one parent expressing regret over the low-cost test not being widely utilized earlier. SMA is a condition characterized by progressive muscle weakness, leading to challenges in mobility and physical support. Jesy acknowledged that her daughters may never walk or fully support their heads, underscoring the impact of the diagnosis.

The candid discussions on SMA by Jesy and the call for improved testing practices have sparked conversations around disability awareness and early intervention, shedding light on the importance of inclusive media representation and accessible healthcare services.
