“Drivers 70+ in UK Face License Renewal Every 3 Years”

Drivers aged 70 and above in Great Britain must adhere to specific regulations when it comes to renewing their driving licenses. In 2025, there were over 6.3 million individuals in this age group holding full car and motorcycle licenses. Unlike the standard 10-year renewal cycle, these older drivers are required to renew their licenses every three years.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) sends reminders to individuals approaching their 70th birthday and when their license renewal is due. While drivers over 70 are not mandated to retake their driving test, they must provide a health declaration before receiving a new license. Those with new medical conditions or disabilities may undergo an assessment of their driving capabilities.

Failure to renew a photocard license upon expiration is illegal and could result in a fine of up to £1,000. The renewal process for over-70s can be completed online through the DVLA website or by filling out ‘D46P application forms’ sent by DVLA to those nearing 70. Additional information can be obtained from the Government’s website and Age UK.

Drivers can continue driving during the renewal process as long as they meet specific requirements and provide necessary information. Renewing a license after 70 incurs no fee, regardless of the application method chosen. It is advised to use the official DVLA website for online renewals to avoid unofficial websites that may charge fees. For more details, visit GOV.UK.
