The altercation was sparked by Crinon’s aggressive hit on Nathan MacKinnon in the third period, leading Wilson to take matters into his own hands. Following Crinon’s penalty and a subsequent powerplay goal for Canada, Wilson felt compelled to address the situation directly.
In a bold move, the 31-year-old discarded his gloves on the ice to engage with Crinon, fully aware that he would be ejected from the game. The International Ice Hockey Federation deems fighting as misconduct, resulting in both Wilson and Crinon being removed from the match for the final seven minutes.
Despite the consequences, Wilson’s actions were deemed worthwhile by Team Canada, who had secured victory and progressed to the elimination stage of the men’s ice hockey competition in Italy. His teammates praised his protective instinct and leadership qualities in the dressing room.
“We were unhappy with the hit; it seemed late and high,” remarked Canada’s star player Connor McDavid. “Willy was just defending himself after the guy instigated the confrontation. That’s the kind of teammate he is. We have nothing but respect for him.”
