A couple facing the challenges of a dementia diagnosis has discovered a way to continue their love for travel. Howard Davidson, a talented clarinet player, stunned audiences with his performance of the Last Post at a local Remembrance Service. However, life has taken a different turn for the 76-year-old since being diagnosed with dementia during the Covid lockdown.
Trish, Howard’s devoted wife, shared that their conversations have become one-sided due to his condition. With a familial history of dementia, Trish anticipated the diagnosis as Howard started to forget things. Despite the difficulties, she remains optimistic, believing in the importance of mental stimulation to defy expectations.
To navigate their new reality, the couple now embarks on supported trips with Dementia Adventure annually. These trips provide a safe and engaging environment for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. Trish recalled their initial experience in 2022 on the Isle of Wight, where they joined a group led by knowledgeable guides. This allowed Howard to indulge in his passion for photography while Trish enjoyed the guided tours stress-free.
Dementia Adventure’s well-planned itineraries, led by former luxury hotel managers, offer unique experiences and social interactions for participants. The group stays together, with round-the-clock assistance, ensuring a worry-free holiday for all. Although the cost is around £2,000 per person for a five-day trip, subsidies are available for those in need, making these enriching experiences accessible.
Trish emphasized the relief and joy these trips bring, allowing her and Howard to relax and create lasting memories.
