Lindsey Vonn faces a long road to recovery after a serious crash during the Winter Olympics. A French specialist surgeon has indicated that it may take several months for her to regain the ability to walk, and there could be lasting effects from the injury.
The American skiing icon was quickly transported to a hospital in Treviso after a high-speed incident at the women’s downhill event. Vonn’s fall occurred early in the race when she lost control and collided with a gate on the course in Cortina.
Following initial treatment, she underwent three surgeries for a complex tibia fracture. Despite progress in her healing journey, Vonn still confronts hurdles in her rehabilitation, including the risk of potential amputation, as noted by orthopedic expert Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet from Lyon, France.
Dr. Sonnery-Cottet emphasized the uncertain timeline for Vonn’s recovery, estimating that it will be months before she can walk normally again. The primary objective now is to preserve her leg and restore her mobility, with a cautious approach to returning to high-level skiing due to the severity of her injuries.
Further assessments indicated that Vonn may experience ongoing challenges, even without the need for amputation. Although surgeries were successful, the presence of an external fixator in her leg suggests that complete healing has not yet been achieved, indicating potential long-term repercussions.
In a social media update, Vonn clarified that her crash was not related to her previous ACL injury and expressed gratitude for her Olympic experience despite the unexpected outcome. She acknowledged the risks inherent in ski racing and life in general, emphasizing the importance of taking chances and pursuing dreams without fear of failure.
