A decorated military veteran was fatally shot during a violent incident at his residence following a Facebook Marketplace transaction that took a tragic turn. Michael Ryan Burke, aged 42, was reportedly engaged in a sale that escalated into a robbery involving a mobile phone. In a distressing final call to law enforcement, Burke provided descriptions of the alleged perpetrators before sending a heartbreaking farewell message to his family.
Authorities in Columbia, Missouri, have apprehended three 18-year-olds and one juvenile male, all facing murder charges in connection to the incident. Despite being shot inside his home, Michael was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Arrests include Alexis Baumann, 18, charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary, and Kobe Aust, 18, arrested for similar charges. Joseph Crane, 18, is being held for second-degree murder, armed criminal action, robbery, burglary, and weapon-related offenses. Additionally, an unnamed male juvenile faces similar charges.
A close friend of Ryan, Jerry Reifeiss, shared the veteran’s final moments, describing his valor in contacting emergency services and informing his family of the dire situation. According to Jerry, Ryan’s actions mirrored the strength he displayed during his military service.
In a statement, the Columbia Missouri Police Department confirmed providing medical aid to Burke before his transport to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The department also confirmed notifying the victim’s next of kin.
Reflecting on Ryan’s character, Jerry remarked on his friend’s selflessness and determination to ensure justice by providing crucial information to aid the investigation. Ryan’s unwavering love for his family was evident in his final messages to them.
In a separate incident, a hitman disguised as a Deliveroo rider was sentenced to 38 years in prison for shooting an eight-year-old girl and her father. Jazz Reid fired multiple shots, injuring both victims, and received a lengthy prison term for the crime.
