At the peak of his dependency, Ray Clements would consume between two to four liters of vodka daily and resorted to using cocaine to sustain his drinking habit. However, a diagnosis of a rare genetic condition leading to sight loss prompted a significant transformation in his lifestyle.
Now aged 53, Ray has excelled as a blind baseball player, securing multiple medals for Great Britain and achieving the distinction of being the sole Englishman to hit a home run in the sport’s annals. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for his loss of sight, stating, “Losing my sight has saved my life. I see more clearly now than I ever have without sight.”
Ray has redirected his focus from alcohol and drugs to pursuing various interests. He is initiating a charity named Finding the Solution, dedicated to introducing goalball, a sport tailored for visually impaired individuals, into mainstream educational institutions.
Since attaining sobriety in February 2022, Ray has guided 15 individuals through their paths to recovery, a process that also aids in maintaining his own commitment. Additionally, his guide dog Garson has become a cherished companion, providing crucial support in his daily life.
His health journey commenced on his 49th birthday when he noticed a significant deterioration in his vision. Following his brother’s advice, Ray sought medical assistance, leading to the discovery of a tear in his eye. Subsequent examinations at Aintree Eye Hospital initially seemed reassuring but later revealed a potential link to a hereditary optic condition.
Subsequently, Ray’s decision to embrace sobriety was influenced by a friend’s revelation about his own recovery journey, eventually leading Ray to attend support meetings and abstain from alcohol.
