Fire TV Stick users are advised to exercise caution when adding new apps to their devices following the suspension of the popular tool “Downloader” from Amazon’s Appstore. The removal of Downloader has paved the way for a deceptive copycat scam app aiming to defraud users.
The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace came to light over the weekend, raising concerns among Fire TV owners who have relied on the tool for almost a decade. Downloader has enabled users to search for and install apps not officially available in mainstream app stores, offering a way to access additional tools or pre-released software versions.
Despite its widespread use, Downloader faced a temporary suspension as a result of a recent update that categorized it as a full web browser by Amazon. The tech giant prohibits third-party browsers on Fire TV devices, which led to the app’s blockage. The developer, Elias Saba, attributed this issue to the app’s browser functionality, prompting him to release an update (v2.0.2) to rectify the browser identification and seek reinstatement on the Appstore.
While awaiting Amazon’s approval, Saba cautioned users about a fraudulent version of Downloader circulating, attempting to deceive Fire TV owners into unauthorized payments. He advised against installing the fake app and urged users to report it to Amazon.
For existing legitimate Downloader users, Saba recommended keeping the app installed as it may not be reinstallable until Amazon resolves the situation. Users were also advised to disable Auto Offload to prevent automatic removal of the legitimate app.
If Amazon greenlights the fix, Downloader could reappear on Fire TV devices later in the week, requiring users to stay vigilant amidst ongoing developments.
