Google Allows Millions to Change Gmail Addresses, US Users Get First Dibs

Millions of Gmail users are in for a significant update as Google announces the rollout of the option to change email addresses, offering a solution for those unhappy with their current Gmail account name.

Google stated, “Your digital identity has been enhanced.” Users now have the ability to modify their Google Account username (the part before @gmail.com), which is used to access various services such as Gmail, Photos, and Drive.

An added benefit of this update is that both the old and new email addresses will function simultaneously, ensuring that messages sent to either account will not be missed. Google reassures users that their stored data, including photos, previous messages, and emails, will remain unaffected.

Although this change is a welcome one from the tech giant, it is currently only available in the US, leaving users in the UK out of the loop for now. For users in the US, checking their settings is recommended at this time.

“For users in the US, navigate to your Google account settings, select personal info,” advised Google. “Click on email, then Google account email. If the option to change Google account email is available, select it, and choose a new and distinct username. Your original address will be retained as an alternate on your account, and remember, only one new address can be created every 12 months. Ensure to review your settings to check for the update.”
