A mother of two, Deb Gascoyne, was faced with a life-altering diagnosis after a routine GP visit for a sore throat led to the discovery of smoldering myeloma, an early stage of blood cancer. Despite experiencing cancer relapses, Deb has been actively involved in fundraising, raising over £248,100 for Myeloma UK and aiming to reach £250,000 to support research for treatments and a cure.
Deb’s journey began in 2009 when she was diagnosed at the age of 34 and received a timely diagnosis thanks to a nurse’s decision to conduct blood tests. Over the years, Deb has celebrated significant family milestones while grappling with survivor’s guilt and exceeding life expectancy projections.
Through various fundraising activities, including cycling challenges and charity events, Deb has remained dedicated to raising awareness and funds for myeloma research. Despite facing relapses and undergoing treatments, she continues her efforts and plans to embark on a cycling journey from London to Paris for her final fundraising endeavor.
Reflecting on her journey, Deb acknowledges the support she has received from the community and emphasizes the importance of staying positive and hopeful in the face of challenges. She encourages others to listen to their bodies and advocate for their health. As she nears the 17-year mark since her diagnosis, Deb remains grateful for the time she has had and is committed to inspiring others through her story.
