“UK Ready to Assist Allies in Intercepting Russian Shadow Ships”

Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has expressed the UK’s readiness to assist allies in intercepting Russian shadow ships that are providing financial support to Vladimir Putin’s military endeavors. Cooper emphasized the need to tighten control over Russia’s clandestine fleet, consisting of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false identities to circumvent Western sanctions. These vessels are believed to be channeling funds to the Kremlin for its activities in Ukraine and for interfering with vital undersea cables.

While British forces recently aided the US in seizing a tanker linked to Russia for violating oil sanctions in Venezuela, no British personnel have directly boarded these shadow vessels yet. However, officials are reportedly exploring the legal framework for potential military interventions.

During her visit to Helsinki, Cooper boarded a patrol vessel and met with the Finnish Border Guard, who play a crucial role in defending against Russian threats along Finland’s extensive border. Notably, the Turva patrol ship was involved in an operation targeting a Russia-linked vessel accused of tampering with undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.

Cooper underscored the urgency for more assertive measures against the shadow fleet, citing its detrimental impact on sanctions, warfare in Ukraine, environmental damage, and national security concerns, including disruptions to undersea infrastructure. She mentioned the possibility of enforcement actions by British forces but emphasized the importance of collaborating with international partners to intensify pressure on these illicit vessels.

Furthermore, Cooper advocated for a complete ban on the transportation of Russian oil to cut off a significant funding source for Moscow. The UK is closely monitoring enforcement actions taken by European allies against rogue vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea and near the French coast.

The Foreign Secretary also observed a demonstration by the Finnish Border Guards showcasing their vessel seizure tactics, which involved armed personnel descending from helicopters to intercept ships. The recent raid on the Fitburg, along with the arrest of its crew, is seen as a strong deterrent, with Finland prepared to use military force against rogue vessels when necessary.

This heightened vigilance follows a rise in Russian vessels posing threats to the UK, with Defense Secretary John Healey issuing warnings after a Russian spy ship, Yantar, engaged in provocative activities near UK waters. Cooper reiterated the UK’s commitment to tightening control over the Russian shadow fleet and Putin’s operations, signaling a firm stance on safeguarding national security within UK waters.

In addition to her discussions with Finnish officials, Cooper engaged with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb as part of her Arctic Circle tour, addressing security concerns in the High North region amid escalating tensions following recent geopolitical developments, including US President Donald Trump’s expressions of interest in Greenland. Trump’s rationale for potentially annexing Greenland, a Danish territory, stems from concerns about Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic region.
