“UK Authorities Probe Elon Musk’s Social Media Over Deepfake Surge”

Authorities have called for an investigation into Elon Musk and his platform due to a surge in sexualized deepfake content circulating on social media. Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, emphasized the need for a criminal inquiry into the matter, stating that their party is taking the issue more seriously than others.

Under the UK’s Online Safety Act, Ofcom has the authority to penalize, disrupt, or restrict access to social media platforms that do not adhere to strict guidelines, particularly those related to safeguarding children online. Ofcom is currently conducting an investigation into the situation.

Sir Ed mentioned contemplating the possibility of leaving the platform when questioned about why he and his party had not yet taken that step despite being vocal critics of Elon Musk. He emphasized the importance of having a strong Liberal voice on the platform.

Additionally, Sir Ed advocated for suspending the platform entirely while Ofcom investigates. Ofcom recently launched a formal probe into the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, to determine if it has violated legal obligations under the Online Safety Act.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall condemned the creation of non-consensual intimate images by AI chatbots like Grok, labeling them as “weapons of abuse.” She announced upcoming legislation that will criminalize apps enabling the creation of fake nude images.

Ms. Kendall emphasized the devastating impact of such content and its disproportionate targeting of women and girls. She stressed that these actions are illegal and violate individuals’ dignity.

Ofcom recently reached out to Musk’s platform regarding concerns about its AI tool, Grok, generating sexualized images of children. The watchdog stated its commitment to investigating potential failures by companies to protect UK residents from harmful content, prioritizing the safety of children.

The Internet Watch Foundation uncovered criminal imagery of minors reportedly created using Grok, prompting swift actions to address the issue. Musk stated that severe consequences await those using Grok for illicit content.

X announced that creating deepfakes via Grok will now be a paid “premium service,” drawing criticism from officials for monetizing abusive content. This move was deemed insensitive to victims of misogyny and sexual violence.
