Storm Goretti to Bring Eight Inches of Snow, Travel Chaos

Up to an additional eight inches of snow is expected to blanket vast areas of the country in the upcoming days, as per warnings issued by the Met Office. The arrival of a new deep area of low pressure, named Storm Goretti by Meteo France, is anticipated to bring about travel disruptions, power outages, and isolation of rural communities on Thursday and Friday. The inclement weather has forced the closure of numerous schools, with the likelihood of remaining shut until Monday.

Record-breaking low temperatures were recorded earlier this week, with Marham, Norfolk plummeting to -12.5C, surpassing the chilliness of Iceland, while the Scottish Highlands experienced -11C. The Met Office has extended weather warnings until Saturday, with the Midlands expected to bear the brunt of the freezing conditions. Areas like Worcestershire and Warwickshire are projected to receive up to eight inches of snow by midday on Friday.

Communities in the affected regions, including Worcestershire, Warwickshire, and parts of southwest Wales, may face isolation due to heavy snowfall. The storm is predicted to move eastward following its initial impact on Thursday night, spreading snow across various regions.

The snowfall will intensify in the early hours of Friday, with Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and Warwickshire likely to experience the heaviest snowfall, while northern regions, including parts of North Yorkshire, are also expected to see snow accumulation. Storm Goretti is forecasted to progress eastward, hitting the East Midlands and East of England by Friday’s rush hour, potentially leading to significant snowfall in areas like Northamptonshire.

Met Office’s chief forecaster, Jason Kelly, indicated that another spell of snow is anticipated to sweep across central and northern Scotland, with amber warnings in place until evening. Elsewhere, snow showers mixed with rain and sleet, along with cold temperatures and strengthening winds, are expected. Sub-zero temperatures are likely to persist, bringing the risk of icy conditions overnight, prompting new yellow weather warnings for ice across the UK until Wednesday morning.

Cold Arctic air remains entrenched across the UK, with Friday feeling as cold as -12C, despite slightly warmer air temperatures. The frigid conditions observed earlier in Marham, Norfolk, with temperatures dropping to -12.5C, set the tone for the wintry weather.
