A recent report by consumer group Which? reveals that major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, indicates that lesser-known networks offer better value and superior customer service.
The study aimed to assess how well providers are meeting customer expectations. Results showed that established giants such as EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality.
Among the top performers in the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. EE ranked ninth out of the big four providers, with O2 and Three scoring lower in the rankings.
Price emerged as a significant factor highlighted in the report, with customers on major networks paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while users on smaller networks paid only £9 on average. Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring comparable signal strength and service quality without the premium price tag of well-known brands.
The report also emphasized the ease of switching networks, with some customers able to transfer in as little as 10 minutes. One respondent shared their experience of switching from O2 to a more affordable SMARTY plan, saving around £200 annually.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, highlighted that smaller providers consistently outshine major firms in terms of customer service and affordability. She encouraged customers nearing the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers offering better value and service.
According to the rankings by Which?, Talkmobile secured the top spot with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, and Voxi at 79%. Other notable scores included EE at 74%, Vodafone at 72%, O2 at 67%, and Three at 65%.
