In the frigid Arctic Circle, the Royal Marines are gearing up for potential conflict. These highly skilled soldiers undergo rigorous training in Arctic warfare and survival during the winter months at Camp Viking, a secluded base in northern Norway.
While the activities in this snowy environment may seem distant from the UK, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper learned during her recent visit to the base that the outcomes here will impact security not only in Britain but also in the Nordics and the wider Europe.
British and Norwegian military forces are stationed here to serve as a deterrent to Russia through mission drills, while also preparing for combat if necessary. The heightened focus on Arctic security comes amid US President Donald Trump’s controversial statements about seizing Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese threats in the region.
The diminishing sea ice due to climate change has opened up new sea routes and exposed valuable mineral resources, including rare earth deposits in Greenland. The UK and its allies are intensifying their presence in the Arctic region to address Russian provocations, acts of sabotage, and threats to Europe.
However, efforts are also directed towards convincing President Trump to reconsider his stance, as any military action against Greenland, a Danish territory and NATO member, could jeopardize the alliance’s integrity.
