Blockbuster romance writer Carley Fortune has revealed the upcoming release of her sixth novel, “Only in Summer,” which is scheduled to debut on May 18, 2027. This new book will transport readers back to the familiar setting of Barry’s Bay, Ont., where Fortune’s previous works, “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer,” were also based. The author shared in a newsletter that she recently purchased a cottage near Barry’s Bay, fulfilling a long-held dream since selling her family home by the lake.
In “Only in Summer,” the protagonist Eleanor Florek, known as Ellie, shares a similar aspiration of owning a property in Barry’s Bay. Ellie, the cousin of characters Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s previous Barry’s Bay novels, has always harbored this desire. Upon finally achieving her goal, Ellie is surprised to find out that the neighboring small house is being torn down to make way for a grand mansion by its new attractive owner. While the details are scarce, one can anticipate a blossoming romance against the backdrop of the lakeside locale.
Fortune, a writer and journalist based in Toronto, has an extensive editorial background with Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, and Toronto Life. Her earlier literary works include “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.” “Meet Me at the Lake” was a finalist on Canada Reads in 2024, supported by fashion influencer and model Mirian Njoh, marking the first romance novel to feature on the show.
The adaptation of “Every Summer After” into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After” has been renewed for a second season, derived from “One Golden Summer.” Furthermore, Netflix Canada is in the process of transforming “This Summer Will Be Different” into a 10-episode series.
