“Coyote vs. Acme” movie premieres, exploring anti-capitalist themes

Wile E. Coyote has utilized various gadgets in his long-running pursuit of the Road Runner without success. However, could the blame for his failures lie with the Acme Corporation? Is it possible that the company responsible for products like the “Instant Tunnel” and the “Do-It-Yourself Tornado Kit” simply produces subpar items?

This concept forms the basis of the movie “Coyote vs. Acme,” where Wile E. Coyote enlists a lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation for the physical pain he has endured from using their products.

After facing delays, the film is set to premiere in theaters this Friday. Initially completed in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery shelved the movie for tax purposes until independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment acquired the rights last year, leading to its revival.

To honor the film’s theme, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite anti-capitalist movies from the past four decades.

“RoboCop” (1987) envisions a future where a corporation, Omni Consumer Products, controls the Detroit police force. The film follows RoboCop, a man-machine creation, as he uncovers the sinister motivations of Omni executives.

In “They Live” (1988), a regular worker discovers special sunglasses that reveal aliens disguised as humans, manipulating society to consume and conform.

“Fight Club” (1999) explores the protagonist’s rebellion against consumerism, culminating in anti-capitalist actions and the destruction of corporate symbols.

“Michael Clayton” (2007) exposes the lengths corporations go to conceal their wrongdoing, with a fixer aiding a law firm in a high-stakes lawsuit.

“WALL-E” (2008) portrays a future where consumerism has devastated Earth, prompting humans to live on a spaceship controlled by the Buy N Large corporation.

“Sorry to Bother You” (2018) follows a telemarketer who discovers unethical practices within a conglomerate, leading to a surreal confrontation with the company’s dark secrets.

“How to Blow Up a Pipeline” (2022) depicts a group challenging the fossil fuel industry through direct action, showcasing the risks and complexities of environmental activism.

These movies offer thought-provoking critiques of capitalism and corporate power in society.
