NBA Coach Legend Don Nelson Dies at 86

Don Nelson, the second most successful coach in NBA history and a five-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics as a player, passed away at the age of 86. His family confirmed the sad news in a statement that did not disclose the location or cause of his death.

Renowned for his coaching prowess across three different franchises — Milwaukee, Dallas, and Golden State — Nelson amassed over 250 wins with each team, a feat achieved by only one other coach in NBA history. Additionally, he held the dual role of general manager for all three franchises. Nelson, a three-time Coach of the Year, led his teams to the playoffs 18 times during his 31-season coaching career, with appearances in the conference finals with the Bucks and Mavericks.

A pioneer of the point forward concept and an advocate of an up-tempo offensive style, Nelson’s innovative strategies revolutionized the game. Crediting his mentor, Celtics legend Red Auerbach, for inspiring his approach to the game, Nelson emphasized the transition to a faster-paced playing style during his coaching tenure.

Noteworthy achievements in Nelson’s illustrious career include coaching the Milwaukee Bucks to seven consecutive division titles and orchestrating remarkable comebacks, such as overcoming a significant deficit against Atlanta during his time with the Bucks. His coaching philosophy prioritized unconventional tactics and speed, evident in his successful tenures with various teams.

Nelson’s impact extended beyond coaching, as he played a crucial role in developing legendary players like Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, who went on to achieve great success in the NBA. His coaching legacy is further exemplified by memorable playoff upsets and mentorship of rising stars like Stephen Curry.

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012, Nelson’s contributions to the sport were recognized with the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025. His legacy as a basketball innovator and influential coach remains indelible in the NBA community.

Born in Muskegon, Michigan, Nelson’s basketball journey began in Rock Island, Illinois, where he excelled in high school before achieving a double-double average in college at Iowa. In his retirement years, he resided in Maui, Hawaii, where he owned several rental properties on the island.

The basketball world mourns the loss of a coaching legend whose impact on the game will forever be remembered and celebrated.
