Conservation efforts to save a rare bird species in the United Kingdom have seen a boost due to the breeding success of a particularly prolific male bird, according to conservationist Mark Thomas.
The male bird, named AU after the chemical symbol for gold, has fathered a remarkable 16 offspring, with 10 born in the past two years alone. Thomas, who leads the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) for this species, highlighted AU’s crucial role in sustaining the population of Montagu’s harriers in the UK.
Montagu’s harriers, migratory birds of prey that breed in Europe, have faced population declines globally, with the UK population particularly vulnerable. The species, once abundant in the 1950s, dwindled to zero breeding pairs in the ’70s before experiencing sporadic recoveries and declines. AU’s successful breeding efforts have been instrumental in supporting the species’ survival in the UK.
The recent breeding success includes six new chicks fathered by AU with two female mates, offering hope for the species’ future. Conservationists have taken measures to protect the newly hatched chicks by keeping their nesting locations confidential and implementing safeguards against predators.
In a significant development, the RSPB has equipped two juvenile harriers with satellite trackers for the first time, enabling researchers to monitor their migration patterns and potential return to the UK for breeding.
