“Power Outage Halts Milano Cortina Winter Olympics Opener”

The Milano Cortina Winter Olympics faced a power outage just 10 minutes after its commencement, causing a temporary halt to the events. The curling competition kicked off the Games, but participants had to pause due to a sudden loss of electricity.

Even though the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro was scheduled for Friday, some sporting events had already begun. The initial mixed doubles round robin matches in curling had to be temporarily stopped because of a power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium.

Officials stopped play during the first end of the match between Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds against Norway. Despite the interruption, Dodds appeared to be in good spirits, seen laughing while officials handled the situation.

BBC commentator Steve Cram, finding humor in the situation, mentioned the power cut at the stadium, causing a pause in play due to the scoring screens going off. However, after a brief delay of around five minutes, competition resumed as the lights flickered back on to the delight of the crowd.

Dodds and Mouat managed to secure an 8-6 victory, starting the round robin phase on a positive note despite the unexpected disruption. Mouat expressed his enjoyment of the venue and ice quality, shrugging off the light outage as a fun dance-like experience.

The UK Sport organization anticipates a potential medal haul of up to eight at the Winter Games through continued investment from sources like the National Lottery and government funding. With over £32.5m invested in the current four-year cycle for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, UK Sport aims for the UK to excel in winter sports.

Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from Beijing 2022 who has transitioned into a leadership role within Team GB, is leading the team as Chef de Mission for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games. She believes in the team’s high potential to challenge the status quo despite facing challenges in snow and ice access compared to other competitors.
