“New Flu Strain in UK Spurs Hospitalizations & Critical Incidents”

A fresh strain of influenza causing infections throughout the UK is exhibiting distinct symptoms, according to medical professionals. The number of individuals hospitalized due to flu surged at the beginning of the year, with 2,924 daily admissions reported up to January 4.

In response to the escalating pressures on healthcare services, four hospital trusts have declared critical incidents. Among them, three trusts in Surrey and one in Kent have taken this step.

The Surrey Heartlands Trust highlighted that the already high winter pressures have been further intensified by a rise in cases of flu and norovirus. National medical director of the NHS, Professor Meghana Pandit, emphasized that the current winter challenges for hospitals are ongoing, with a recent increase in flu and respiratory virus patients.

Professor Pandit stressed the importance of seeking medical care as usual and underlined the availability of flu vaccinations for protection. Health Secretary Wes Streeting echoed this sentiment, urging eligible individuals to promptly get vaccinated against flu, especially considering the seriousness of the illness for certain demographics.

Physicians have observed distinct symptoms associated with the new flu strain, identified as subclade K within the A H3N2 subtype. Notably, patients are experiencing prolonged high fevers lasting up to seven days, along with persistent coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle and joint pains.

Furthermore, medical practitioners have noted an uptick in cases involving gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting, indicating the presence of the subclade K flu strain. It is advised that individuals watch for sudden onset of severe symptoms, as flu can progress rapidly and cause significant discomfort.

The NHS recommends self-care measures for managing flu symptoms in most cases, with guidance on when to seek medical attention or emergency care if symptoms worsen. It is crucial to be vigilant and proactive in addressing flu-related health concerns, especially during this period of heightened flu activity.
