A woman recently disclosed her experience within a Chinese ‘fat prison’ where she underwent a 28-day program aimed at weight loss. TL Huang, an Australian living in China, endured a strict regimen at the facility in Guangzhou. The institution enforced rules prohibiting unhealthy foods like instant noodles, and residents were housed in cramped dormitories surrounded by high walls, gates, and electric fencing.
According to Huang, inmates were closely monitored and restricted from leaving the premises without valid reasons. She described the controlled environment as regimented, with no opportunity to sneak out due to constant security surveillance.
Having gained weight from consuming takeout meals, Huang followed her mother’s advice to enroll in the state-sponsored ‘fat prison.’ She found herself subjected to mandatory weigh-ins twice daily and rigorous four-hour exercise sessions. Meals were carefully portioned and included dishes like prawns with vegetables, chili steamed fish, and braised chicken.
During her third week, Huang fell ill with flu and a high fever, leading to hospitalization. Despite feeling drained and unwell, she expressed no regrets about her decision to join the program. In China, over half of the adult population is classified as overweight or obese, prompting the establishment of such facilities to address the rising obesity rates.
Huang paid $600 for her stay, covering accommodation, meals, and workout sessions. She highlighted the stark difference between her previous lifestyle and the structured routine enforced at the camp. While initially challenging, the experience helped her adapt to healthier eating habits and exercise routines.
Filming her journey at the camp, Huang shared her struggles with calorie tracking and the demanding workout schedule. Ultimately, she shed 6kg in four weeks, attributing the experience to building better habits and a healthier lifestyle. Huang emphasized the positive impact of the program on her health journey, encouraging others to view such initiatives as a valuable first step towards wellness and self-improvement.
