“Virgin Media Advises on Weather’s Impact on Internet Speed”

Virgin Media has shared some valuable advice to ensure consistent internet speeds throughout the year. While common tips like placing the router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal disruptions are known to enhance performance, one often overlooked factor is the impact of weather changes.

With temperatures climbing in late spring and summer, routers face increased stress, necessitating a cool and well-ventilated location to maintain optimal functioning.

Addressing the effects of warmer weather on broadband speed, Virgin Media stated in a recent blog post: “High temperatures during hot weather can strain both external and internal broadband equipment.”

“Although external equipment is built to withstand heat, routers inside homes may struggle if exposed to excessive warmth.

“Proper airflow is essential for routers to function efficiently. Placing your Hub behind furniture, in a confined space, near a heat source, or in direct sunlight can lead to heat buildup, particularly during a heatwave, resulting in slower speeds, connection drops, or automatic router restarts for cooling.”

Therefore, during warm weather, ensure your router is situated in a cooler environment. While hot conditions can affect performance, other weather patterns are less likely to disrupt your online activities.

Virgin Media emphasized: “Most broadband issues that appear weather-related actually stem from indoor factors.

“Factors like thick walls, excessive connected devices, and poor Hub placement have a more significant daily impact on your connection than external weather conditions.”

For optimal Wi-Fi performance, position your Hub centrally in an open area away from direct sunlight.

Additionally, Virgin Media recommends avoiding large metal objects and keeping the router visible instead of hiding it behind furniture.

Following severe weather, remember to check the condition of your cables. “After storms or strong winds, ensure cables are intact and securely connected,” the company advised.

Lastly, minimize interference by reducing the number of simultaneous connected devices for improved connectivity.
