The mother of the youngest British soldier to lose his life in Afghanistan expressed deep distress over Donald Trump’s recent remarks criticizing NATO forces. Trump belittled the contributions of over 400 British soldiers who served and perished in Afghanistan, claiming they did not engage at the front lines.
During a TV interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump’s comments drew anger from veterans and families of those who served in Afghanistan. Lucy Aldridge, mother of Rifleman William Aldridge, the youngest British casualty in Afghanistan, found Trump’s words “extremely upsetting.” William died in a bomb explosion shortly after turning 18.
Aldridge highlighted that her son served in the perilous Sangin region of Helmand Province during the deadliest period for allied forces. She criticized Trump for overlooking the sacrifices made by soldiers in combat and lacking empathy for those who serve.
In a separate interview with Fox News, Trump reiterated his dissatisfaction with NATO’s treatment of the US, dismissing the efforts of NATO allies in Afghanistan as insufficient. Despite invoking Article 5 of the NATO treaty following 9/11 to engage in Afghanistan, Trump downplayed the role of NATO forces.
The UK, along with other NATO members, sent thousands of troops to support the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, resulting in significant casualties. Retired army Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon condemned Trump’s ignorance of the UK’s significant contributions to the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
Various military figures, including Ben Hodges and Lord Sedwill, criticized Trump’s remarks as disrespectful to the sacrifices made by troops from various nations. The UK’s Lib Dem leader Ed Davey also condemned Trump’s comments, highlighting the President’s history of avoiding military service.
This is not the first time Trump has shown disregard for fallen soldiers; past incidents include reportedly calling American soldiers “losers” and “suckers.” His controversial statements have sparked outrage and condemnation from military officials and politicians alike.
