A Food Basics store will be taking over a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys area this autumn, leading to job losses for numerous employees. Metro Inc. stated that the decision to convert the store was made to better cater to the local customer demands in the region. The move came as a surprise to workers at the Southgate Metro, with one long-time employee expressing shock at the sudden closure notification received in May.
Metro confirmed that the change was prompted by local market conditions and customer requirements rather than rent costs, as speculated. The affected Southgate Metro staff, totaling 72 employees, are not allowed to transfer to other Metro locations as per their collective agreement. However, they are encouraged to apply for positions at the new Food Basics store, with specific employment quotas set for former Southgate employees.
Despite the negotiated ‘enhanced options’ by the United Food and Commercial Workers union for its members, including job opportunities at the new store and severance benefits, many employees remain uncertain about their future. The union is working to ensure the rights of its members are protected amid the transition. Legal experts suggest that issues arising from the conversion could potentially lead to litigation if not resolved through settlements between the parties involved.
