RBC CEO Dave McKay highlighted the resilience of the Canadian economy, citing improvements in employment and GDP in the second quarter as indicators of potential continued growth. TD Bank CEO Raymond Chun mentioned a growing “super cycle” of investments in Canada, driven by government spending on infrastructure and national defense projects. CIBC CEO Harry Culham expressed confidence in the latter half of the year, emphasizing the importance of closely monitoring the evolving trade environment.
A study by Oxford Economics for the Canadian American Business Council warned of potential job losses if the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement were to be eliminated. BMO Capital Markets predicted that the latest U.S. tariffs could reduce Canadian growth by approximately half a percentage point, primarily through decreased business confidence and investment. National Bank’s CEO Laurent Ferreira commended the country’s resilience and praised government initiatives to support businesses affected by tariffs, such as the icebreaker shipbuilding contract in Quebec.
Bank of Montreal and Scotiabank CEOs also voiced confidence in managing the trade war between Canada and the U.S. Despite these challenges, shares of Canadian banks on the Toronto Stock Exchange have remained strong, with the BMO Equal Weight Banks Index ETF showing significant growth over the past year.
