“From Restriction to Freedom: Iranian Woman Finds Joy in Running Community”

Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in her local running group, which is more than just a hobby for her—it’s a realization of a long-held aspiration. Having moved to St. John’s in 2022 from Iran, where women face significant limitations in sports participation, Jahankha feels fortunate to be living her dreams in Canada. The Center for Human Rights in Iran highlights the strict dress codes imposed on Iranian women athletes for public sporting events, with many sports opportunities being restricted by the government.

In a recent incident reported by the BBC, two marathon organizers were arrested for allowing women without hijabs to join the race. Jahankha shared that she had attempted to start running in Tehran during her 20s but was unable due to the circumstances. Now residing in St. John’s and working as a teacher, she reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her passion for the sport.

Jahankha found a supportive community of runners on Facebook, where she received guidance from a coach and joined a beginner group. Embracing the camaraderie within the running community, she expressed gratitude for the encouragement and assistance she received. Despite the ongoing tensions related to the United States-Iran conflict, Jahankha emphasized how running has become a source of stress relief and joy in her life.

Participating in a Pride race with her husband and daughter last month, Jahankha looks forward to her upcoming 5-kilometer race on August 16. She expressed appreciation for the opportunities and freedom she experiences in Canada, contrasting it with the limitations and challenges faced in her home country. Running has become an integral part of Jahankha’s life, symbolizing freedom and empowerment in her new environment.
