The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has implemented a ban on the importation of new humanoid robots and power inverters from foreign countries, citing concerns about national security. This ban specifically targets China, which is a dominant force in the global market for humanoid robots, holding an estimated 85% market share. Beijing has criticized the U.S., calling the move protectionist.
The restrictions are expected to strain relations with China ahead of an upcoming visit by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to meet with President Donald Trump in September. The ban extends not only to humanoid robots but also to quadruped robots, commonly known as four-legged robot dogs. The FCC stated that the importation of advanced robots poses cybersecurity and national security threats, leaving U.S. supply chains vulnerable to disruptions.
Additionally, the ban on power inverters, crucial for converting electricity in various applications, could have significant implications. FCC Chair Brendan Carr emphasized that the aim is to safeguard critical U.S. supply chains, applying to new versions of these imports.
These measures follow a series of restrictions on Chinese imports by the U.S., including drones, and limitations on the export of advanced technology to China. The U.S. is also contemplating controls on the use of Chinese open-source artificial intelligence models, aligning with the broader context of tensions between the two nations.
China has been rapidly expanding its robotics industry, with policies supporting technological advancements. Analysts predict that the Chinese humanoid robot market could reach $15 billion by 2030. While restricting Chinese access to the U.S. market may protect American developers from price competition, it is unlikely to hamper China’s overall progress due to its robust domestic manufacturing base and other global opportunities.
China has vowed to respond to the ban, expressing concerns over U.S. actions that they perceive as an overreach in the name of national security. This move could potentially disrupt collaborations between U.S. and Chinese tech firms, such as Nvidia’s recent unveiling of a humanoid robot design utilizing Chinese technology. The ban may also impact companies like Unitree, which have been accused by the Pentagon of having ties to the Chinese military, a claim Beijing has dismissed.
