The move to increase contributions, dubbed the “Netflix tax,” came after the passage of the Online Streaming Act in 2023.
The government plans to release the new policy directive to the CRTC in the near future, as outlined in the July 17 court document submitted in the Federal Court of Appeal. Despite changing course due to pressure from the U.S., the government has faced criticism, with the U.S. Trade Representative indicating that Canada may not receive recognition for its actions.
Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that the decision to eliminate the tax on large streamers was made with affordability in mind. The government’s move to shift from contributions to providing industry funding aims to support Canadian content creation. However, stakeholders like the Canadian Media Producers Association stress the importance of foreign streamers investing in Canadian content.
