“EE Warns Users of Resurgent Scam Texts”

EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have observed a recent increase in urgent messages targeting EE customers, claiming the imminent loss of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.

According to Bitdefender, individuals receiving messages warning of expiring EE reward points, such as 12,739 points within three days, should be cautious as these messages are likely part of a scam. Scammers are posing as EE to entice recipients into clicking on malicious links that redirect them to fraudulent websites aimed at stealing login credentials for financial gain.

The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency, prompting users to act hastily without due consideration. Bitdefender explains that scammers manipulate recipients by setting tight deadlines to give the impression of impending loss, with the links leading to deceptive sites rather than legitimate EE platforms.

To avoid falling victim to such scams, EE advises users to ignore unsolicited text messages containing countdowns or urgent requests. Genuine EE alerts are typically found within official EE accounts and not in unsolicited texts. Any suspicious messages should be forwarded to 7726 and then deleted immediately.

This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with reports of convincing fake messages regarding reward points circulating earlier this year. Users have shared their experiences, cautioning others to be vigilant and avoid clicking on suspicious links.

EE has reiterated that they do not run a points program and has highlighted examples of scam messages circulating, urging users to redeem alleged prizes before an imminent expiration date. To protect against such scams, EE recommends refraining from clicking on unknown links in text messages, avoiding replies to suspicious messages, refraining from calling the numbers provided in such messages, and never sharing personal or financial information.

For EE users, vigilance is key in safeguarding against fraudulent activities.
