“Canadians Embrace Buy Canadian Movement Amid U.S. Tariffs”

Since early 2025, when the U.S. initiated tariffs on Canada, Francine Piché has been consciously avoiding American products. The Burlington, Ont., resident has adopted a household rule prioritizing Canadian products, followed by non-U.S. options, and avoiding American goods whenever feasible. Piché has proactively switched to Canadian personal care brands, terminated her Amazon membership, and shelved plans for a trip to New York to minimize supporting U.S. businesses with her spending.

Following the recent implementation of new 50 percent U.S. tariffs due to failed trade negotiations, Piché has vowed to cease all exceptions in supporting American products. Her family intends to discontinue their remaining American streaming service subscriptions upon renewal. Additionally, Piché is prepared to forgo some of her favorite gluten-free foods made in the U.S., despite struggling to find suitable alternatives.

The resurgence of the Buy Canadian movement has gained momentum as consumers have rekindled their interest in Canadian-made products amid escalating trade tensions with the U.S. Online platforms like the Made in Canada Facebook group have experienced a surge in new members and engagement, with a focus on finding Canadian alternatives for various products. Similarly, apps like O SCANada, offering information on product origins, have witnessed a notable increase in downloads, reflecting a growing interest in supporting local businesses.

While some consumers prioritize price over the origin of products, others, like the founder of Peace by Chocolate in Nova Scotia, have seen increased support for Canadian brands. Tareq Hadhad credits the Buy Canadian movement for a significant rise in website traffic and expects a boost in sales. The movement’s impact extends beyond individual choices, influencing businesses to prioritize Canadian suppliers and showcasing solidarity with homegrown brands.

As the Buy Canadian movement gains traction, consumers are increasingly mindful of their purchasing power and the significance of supporting local businesses. Despite ongoing trade uncertainties, many are committed to sustaining this trend and promoting Canadian products as a display of national pride and unity.
