“Canadian Consumers Embrace Affordable Australian Beef Over Local Options”

Australian beef is available in Canadian supermarkets at lower prices compared to Canadian beef, causing concerns among some producers but delighting consumers seeking affordability. Tyler Fulton, president of the Canadian Cattle Association, highlighted the longstanding presence of Australian beef in the market, particularly in steak cuts gaining consumer attention.

Various factors contribute to the price variance, according to Fulton, who explained that the grass-based Australian production model results in leaner beef with less marbling, which may not align with Canadian preferences. Retailers leveraging a ‘loss leader’ strategy also play a significant role in the pricing dynamics.

Since the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2018, Australia has gained increased access to the Canadian beef market. While acknowledging the benefits of the agreement for Canada in other markets like Japan and Vietnam, Fulton emphasized the temporary role of imported beef in filling supply gaps, reassuring Canadian producers about the quality standards.

Shoppers at Loblaws-owned stores in Regina shared their perspectives, with some expressing concerns about the high cost of Canadian beef leading them to opt for more affordable alternatives. Loblaws reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Canadian beef producers while offering customers choice and value amid evolving market dynamics.

Fulton expressed optimism about domestic growth opportunities for Canadian producers, citing recent positive trends in the beef sector. Despite challenges, he emphasized the importance of catering to the Canadian consumer market while exploring international prospects for the industry’s future.
