A former street gang leader is alleged to have masterminded the 1996 drive-by shooting of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for his nephew’s beating, a prosecutor informed jurors during the commencement of a murder trial linked to a long-standing unsolved case that left a lasting mark on rap music history.
Duane (Keffe D) Davis, aged 63, faces a single charge of murder with a deadly weapon in Clark County, Nevada. Davis, who has pleaded not guilty, is accused of leading a group of men in the fatal shooting of Shakur, a prominent figure in the rap industry, during a drive-by incident near the Las Vegas Strip in 1996.
Prosecutor Binu Palal revealed to jurors in a Las Vegas courthouse that Davis ensured the assailants were armed and prepared to carry out the attack when the opportunity for revenge arose. Recent public statements made by Davis reignited the long-dormant case.
Defense attorney Michael Sanft argued that despite 30 years passing, investigators lack substantial evidence to support their case against Davis. Sanft dismissed Davis’s accounts as unreliable and unverifiable, emphasizing the absence of factual support from his interviews and book.
The killing of Shakur amplified the perception of violence within hip-hop culture, particularly during the era of “gangsta” rap, fueling the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry.
Authorities revealed that Davis, a long-time suspect in the murder, was not formally charged until 2023 when he started incriminating himself through public statements. The trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, is anticipated to last up to six weeks, with potential testimony from Marion (Suge) Knight, a co-founder of Death Row Records, who was present when Shakur was killed and is currently serving a prison sentence for an unrelated conviction.
Davis, described as the orchestrator of the plot, sought vengeance for his nephew’s altercation with Shakur and his entourage at the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas, which culminated in the fatal shooting. The incident was rooted in animosity between two Los Angeles-based street gangs, the South Side Compton Crips led by Davis and Mob Piru associated with Knight and Death Row Records.
Davis allegedly procured the murder weapon and directed two accomplices in a white Cadillac to target Knight and Shakur’s vehicle, resulting in Shakur’s death and Knight’s injury. The trial has been rejuvenated by Davis’s 2018 statements regarding his involvement in the shooting, as detailed in his memoir.
Tupac fan O’Ron Gordy expressed skepticism about uncovering the truth behind Shakur’s death but remains eager to learn any new developments during the trial. Davis, who has been a suspect in both Shakur’s and Christopher Wallace’s (The Notorious B.I.G.) murders, hinted at the connection between the two unsolved cases in his book.
