Curtis Dagenais is set to appear in a Saskatoon court later this month, 20 years after he killed two Saskatchewan RCMP officers and wounded another. The court hearing revolves around his desire to retain ownership of his 1986 blue GMC 1500 truck, currently stored at RCMP headquarters in Regina. The Crown is seeking to have the truck forfeited for destruction, while Dagenais opposes this action.
In July 2006, Dagenais was involved in a confrontation with three RCMP constables in Spiritwood that resulted in a fatal shooting. Following a chase, Dagenais’s truck was cornered by the officers, leading to a violent altercation where two constables lost their lives, and another was injured.
Dagenais was convicted in 2009 on multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Despite his appeals, the convictions were upheld by the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal in 2012.
The recent court proceedings regarding the truck’s forfeiture stem from an oversight, as the Crown prosecutor, Scott Bartlett, admitted that the application had been overlooked in the past. Dagenais, who maintains his innocence, wants to preserve the truck as potential evidence with bullet holes that he believes could support his case.
With Innocence Canada not representing Dagenais and no progress on his case, the court adjourned the forfeiture application. Dagenais, representing himself, asked for more time to secure legal representation, leading to a scheduled hearing on August 31.
