Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, the guitarist of the renowned band Black Midi, has passed away at the age of 26. An emotional message shared by Matt’s father, Tony, was posted on the Instagram page of their record label, Rough Trade Records, earlier today.
The message conveyed, “With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin after a prolonged struggle with mental health challenges. A gifted musician and a compassionate individual, Matt, at the age of 26, has left us despite relentless efforts.”
In a closing statement, it was expressed, “His memory will forever be cherished. We urge everyone to connect with their loved ones to prevent such tragedies among our young men.”
The label also expressed their condolences, stating, “Rough Trade Records extends heartfelt sympathies to the Kwasniewski-Kelvin family for sharing this heartbreaking news about the loss of the founding member of Black Midi, Matt – an immensely talented individual who will be deeply missed.”
The statement urged individuals dealing with mental health issues to seek help from loved ones or organizations like Mind, CALM, and Samaritans for support and guidance in times of need.
Tributes poured in from various personalities, with BBC 6Music’s Mary Anne Hobbs paying her respects, saying, “I’m deeply saddened to hear this tragic news. Rest in peace Matt, you brilliant talent.”
Others also expressed their grief, with one commenting, “Rest peacefully, Matt. A musician who broke barriers and left us too soon,” while another wrote, “A remarkable soul and musician, rest in peace Matthew, you were truly loved.”
Matt, a member of Black Midi alongside Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, and drummer Morgan Simpson, all alumni of the renowned BRIT School, began their journey in 2017, marking their debut performance at the Brixton Windmill in south London.
Their first single was released the following year, followed by their debut album Schlagenheim in 2019, which was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize.
In 2021, Matt departed from the group citing mental health struggles, with his bandmates offering their unwavering support for his recovery, eagerly awaiting the day they could reunite and perform together.
Black Midi continued as a trio, releasing two more albums – Cavalcade and Hell Fire – before taking a hiatus in 2024 to pursue individual projects.
