A man has been given a 30-year prison sentence for the killing of his own daughter and disturbingly messaged his sons following the crime.
Ryan al Najjar was discovered bound and silenced, face down in a pond at a secluded country park shortly after turning 18. Her father, Khaled al Najjar, took her life, citing her increasing “westernized” behavior, allegedly influenced by her brothers Muhanad, 25, and Muhamad, 24.
Ryan’s mother Sumaia al Najjar and her husband had taken drastic measures to leave war-torn Syria and seek asylum in the Netherlands. However, in a tragic turn of events eight years later, Ryan was brutally murdered due to her modernized lifestyle that her father disapproved of.
Her body was found wrapped in 18 meters of duct tape in shallow water at the nearby Oostvarrdersplassen nature reserve. Traces of Khaled’s DNA were found on the tape and under Ryan’s fingernails, indicating she was still alive when thrown into the water. Khaled later confessed, regretting not burying her.
During the trial, it was revealed that the two brothers had driven Ryan to the isolated location and left her with their father, implicating them in her murder. Digital evidence from their phones and algae on their shoes connected them to the crime scene.
Khaled has since fled to Syria and is living with another woman. He was tried in absentia and received a 30-year sentence while Ryan’s brothers were convicted of aiding in the murder and received 20-year prison terms.
Despite outward appearances of integration, tensions within the family rose over Ryan’s attire and behavior. Sumaia disclosed her husband’s abusive nature and manipulation, alleging that he used violent language from her phone to frame Ryan. She described him as violent and controlling, instilling fear in the family.
Ryan’s rebellion at a young age due to wanting to fit in, including changes in clothing and social activities, further strained family dynamics. Descriptions from family members portrayed Khaled as unjust, controlling, and temperamental, creating a fearful environment at home.
Iman, one of Ryan’s sisters, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting their father’s oppressive nature and unfair treatment towards the family. She recounted instances of physical abuse and threats, illustrating a domineering presence that led to tragic consequences for Ryan.
