The mayor of The Pas has tendered his resignation just weeks before a local election and confirmed he will not seek re-election this fall. Andre Murphy, who first assumed office as the mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, announced his decision to step down immediately via an online platform on Monday evening.
In an interview with CBC News, Murphy disclosed his resignation and clarified that he will not be a candidate in the upcoming election, leaving The Pas without a mayor for the next nine weeks until the municipal elections on October 28. Deputy mayor Carrie Atkinson will take on most of the day-to-day responsibilities until the election day.
Murphy revealed that he and his family deliberated over the choice last week and formally notified the council on Monday. Despite contemplating running for another term, he had a change of heart during the summer, leading to his decision to step down. He emphasized his commitment to fully engaging in any role he undertakes, hence the need to exit gracefully from the possibility of another term.
Expressing his desire to spend more quality time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren residing in eastern Canada, Murphy emphasized his deep connection to The Pas, which he considers his long-time home for over 50 years. He emphasized that while leaving his mayoral duties, he holds a positive outlook for the town’s future.
Reflecting on his tenure, Murphy highlighted his achievements in fostering collaborations with neighboring communities and government bodies, resolving local challenges, and securing substantial funding for recreational and infrastructural projects. He expressed confidence in the town’s council and administration to continue steering The Pas in the right direction post his departure.
Emphasizing the potential for growth and development in northern Manitoba, Murphy conveyed his optimism for the region’s future and pledged his continued support for its progress. CBC News attempted to reach the town councillors of The Pas for comments on Murphy’s resignation.
