Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made a rare discovery in July while exploring the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit. He stumbled upon a species seldom seen in the Arctic, which could have implications for invasive species in Northern habitats as the climate shifts.
Koehler found a brownish weed-like plant known as bladderwort when he reached into a pond during his stroll. Describing the plant as inconspicuous to the untrained eye, he highlighted its unique features.
The carnivorous bladderwort plant is adorned with small black balls, or bladders, containing almost digested flies. Typically found in more southern regions, this insect-eating species rarely makes its way to the tundra.
The only previous sighting of bladderwort in the area dates back to 2012 when scientists discovered samples outside Kimmirut, about 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. This finding was documented in the scientific journal Phytokeys.
During three Arctic expeditions, the team identified over 30 new plant species in the Arctic archipelago.
Koehler views this discovery as a potential indicator of climate change. While the Arctic currently harbors few invasive species due to its harsh conditions, warming temperatures are creating a more favorable environment for non-native plants.
He anticipates a shift in the ecosystem, with vegetation expanding as summers become warmer and winters milder. Koehler and Paul Sokoloff from Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, who was part of the 2012 study, express concerns about the potential introduction of invasive species into the Arctic through various means, such as birds and human activity.
While Koehler’s find may not pose an immediate threat, Sokoloff warns about the impact of invasive species on native flora. The spread of species like Phragmite, an invasive grass from Eurasia, has caused ecological damage in parts of Canada.
According to a study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, over 2,500 species have the capacity to invade the Arctic, altering its natural balance. Sokoloff emphasizes the need to monitor and understand the implications of climate change on plant migration.
Koehler intends to send a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort to the Museum of Nature for further analysis, aiming to contribute to the scientific understanding of the plant’s expansion northward.
