A new mother shares her experience of falling into a gambling addiction after receiving a complimentary £5 online bingo bet from a friend. Molly Clipsham, who had never gambled before, decided to try her luck after being encouraged to sign up on a bingo platform with a referral code to claim the free bet.
During her second bingo game, Molly, aged 26, won £1,397.60, igniting a desire for more wins. She then progressed to making regular £10 deposits and eventually transitioned to online slots, sometimes spending £100 in just 15 minutes. Using her significant wins, she funded extravagant trips with her fiancé Michael Kirwin, but acknowledges that the pursuit of potential wins led to a sense of greed.
Although she briefly stopped gambling during her pregnancy, Molly found herself spiraling back into the habit after the birth of her son in August. Upon realizing she had deposited £4,000 into her gambling account, with only around £2,000 withdrawn as winnings, Molly recognized the substantial losses she had incurred.
Today, she has successfully turned her life around and is sharing her journey to recovery to support others facing similar challenges.
Reflecting on her experience, Molly, residing in Grimsby, recalled, “In 2021, my friend introduced me to online bingo sites. She mentioned that signing up using her code would grant me a free £5 to play with. After my initial game, where I didn’t win, I continued playing. It was during my second game when I won £1,397 that everything changed for me.”
She added, “Initially, I played on weekends, starting with small amounts like £5 or £10, not realizing I was on the path to addiction.”
Over time, Molly transitioned from bingo to casino games, viewing gambling as a supplementary income source that funded trips to Disney World. However, as the pursuit of significant wins intensified, she found herself spending large sums, such as £100 in a single bath session.
Molly admitted, “I encountered an online slots advertisement and decided to shift to that. Shortly after, I secured another substantial win of about £2,000. Gambling seemed more profitable than my regular job, enabling our Disney World trip. But the desire for bigger wins consumed me, leading to impulsive spending and chasing losses.”
While she temporarily halted gambling during pregnancy, Molly fell back into the habit postpartum, acknowledging the neglect of her son due to excessive gambling. The turning point arrived when she realized her total deposits exceeded £4,000 over four years, prompting her to seek help and quit gambling for good.
Despite the common perception of gambling as a male-dominated activity, Molly highlights the appeal of social aspects, particularly chat rooms, to women. She emphasized the importance of sharing experiences and supporting one another in combating addictive behaviors.
Molly emphasized the challenges of avoiding gambling sites, noting the intrusive nature of manipulative TV adverts targeting unsuspecting viewers. She urged vigilance in monitoring expenses and emphasized the significance of family as a motivation to resist gambling temptations.
In response to the growing concerns around gambling advertising, regulatory bodies such as the Gambling Commission and the Advertising Standards Authority have implemented stringent rules to ensure responsible marketing practices and protect vulnerable individuals from harm. Recent updates include restrictions on potentially harmful promotional offers and enhanced safeguards for under-18s in gambling advertisements.
