WhatsApp is set to introduce a significant update aimed at reassuring parents. This upcoming change will enable adults to exercise specific controls on devices, preventing pre-teens from accessing certain features or participating in group chats without authorization.
Parents or guardians will have the ability to determine who can contact the account, ensuring that strangers cannot initiate conversations unexpectedly.
Furthermore, parents can review message requests from unfamiliar contacts and manage the account’s privacy settings.
According to WhatsApp, the platform is a trusted mode of communication for families due to its simplicity, privacy, and reliability. The company stated that, based on feedback from families and experts, they are launching new parent-managed accounts. These accounts will allow parents or guardians to set up WhatsApp for pre-teens, with controls to restrict their usage to messaging and calling.
To initiate this setup, parents will need to have both the phone intended for the family member and their own device nearby to link the accounts. Once established, these accounts will be under the control of the parent or guardian.
Only parents have access to and can modify privacy settings, ensuring they have the authority to customize their family’s experience.
All personal conversations are kept private and secure with end-to-end encryption, guaranteeing that no one, not even WhatsApp itself, can access or intercept them.
WhatsApp mentioned that the update will be gradually implemented over the next few months.
“We are looking forward to receiving your feedback as we progressively introduce parent-managed accounts, aiming to enhance WhatsApp as the safest and most private platform for families to connect.”
