Love it or hate it, Wetherspoons, often referred to as “Spoons,” is a well-established part of British culture. With approximately 800 locations throughout the UK, the chain generated £2 billion in revenue last year. From its distinctive 70s-style carpets to its affordable drinks, outspoken CEO Tim Martin, and the transformation of historic Victorian buildings into bustling pubs, Wetherspoons has become ingrained in the British consciousness.
However, what many may not realize is that Wetherspoons not only operates pubs but also has been managing hotels since 1998. The first Wetherspoons hotel, located in Shrewsbury, offered 22 rooms alongside its pub services. Since then, 54 additional Wetherspoons Hotels have been established.
Despite reservations about Tim Martin’s political involvement and concerns about its impact on independent pubs, my recent visit to a Wetherspoons hotel changed my perspective. Following a recognition by Which? as the most affordable hotel in the country, I decided to give it a try.
During my stay at the Thomas Ingoldsby in Canterbury, I was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional offerings. Wetherspoons stands out for its affordability, scoring high in value for money according to the Which? survey. While other hotels charge substantially more, Wetherspoons offers rooms at very competitive rates.
From enjoying a budget-friendly breakfast to affordable pints of ale, the experience was remarkable. The vibrant atmosphere at the hotel pub was a stark contrast to my previous visit to a Wetherspoons in London. The hotel rooms, conveniently located above the pub, were well-maintained and offered stunning views of Canterbury Cathedral.
The room amenities, including a well-equipped desk, TV, and picturesque views, exceeded expectations. The hotel also provided essential comforts such as Wi-Fi, refreshments, and toiletries, ensuring a pleasant stay. With reasonable rates and a welcoming ambiance, Wetherspoons Hotels offer a unique social space that appeals to a diverse range of visitors.
Ultimately, Wetherspoons’ foray into the hotel industry provides a budget-friendly yet quality accommodation option, further solidifying its position as a beloved British institution.
