In parts of northern India, temperatures can plummet below freezing during the winter, posing challenges for elephants residing at a conservation center in Mathura. To help the elephants combat the cold, local villagers have crafted large, colorful woolly garments to cover the animals’ bodies and legs.
These handmade garments, described as “huge jumpers and legwear,” were specially knitted by villagers to provide warmth to the elephants at the sanctuary. The Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center, which houses these rescued elephants, ensures their well-being and protection from the harsh winter conditions.
According to Kartick Satyanarayan, the co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS, the elephants, having endured various forms of abuse and exploitation, are particularly vulnerable to the cold weather. The added layers of warmth not only shield them from illnesses like pneumonia but also alleviate the effects of conditions such as arthritis, which commonly afflict these rescued animals.
Geeta Seshamani, secretary and co-founder of Wildlife SOS, emphasized the importance of offering a safe environment for the rescued elephants to thrive and live in a manner befitting their species.
The heartwarming images of elephants donning these unique sweaters generated positive reactions on social media platform Reddit, with users expressing admiration for the villagers’ knitting skills and the compassionate care extended to the elephants. Observers noted that while elephants naturally have thick skin layers for insulation in the wild, these rescued elephants, with compromised health and mobility issues, greatly benefit from the hand-knitted garments as vital medical support in the cold climate.
The endearing sight of elephants adorned in cozy sweaters not only reflects the villagers’ dedication but also highlights the collaborative efforts to ensure the well-being of these majestic animals at the Wildlife SOS sanctuary.
